The fried or grilled leaves of nopal cacti seems to be something typical for Mexico. Locals enjoy them as well as prickly pears that grow atop. The fruit comes in two varieties—the purple is distinguished by a greater sweetness and stronger flavour, while green ones are less strong but still yummy.

Though nopal cacti grow in Mexico year-round, the peak season for its fruit and leaves is late summer through winter—to be more precise September to December.
