Vinho Verde in Portugal 2025
Light sparkling wines, perfect for summer heat
Best time: August–September
Vinhos Verdes or 'green wines' are the national treasure of Portugal along with port wine. Traditionally it is made in Minho province in the far north and is not grape varietal. There are red and rosé 'green wines', however, the whites are the most successful. Green wines are produced from grapes that are not fully ripe so its harvesting season starts in August. Visiting Minho province during Vinhos Verdes harvest is a great experience since there are about 19,000 small wine producers there. Wine is being produced and tasted literally everywhere.
