Škofja Loka Passion Play 2021 in Slovenia
You wouldn’t want to miss the incredible Škofja Loka Passion Play which happens only once every six years
Dates: late Mar–Apr 2021 (TBA)
The oldest play written in the Slovene language, the Škofja Loka Passion Play, was written in 1715 and tells biblical stories, particularly from the life of Jesus. Back in the 18th century the play was staged each year on Good Friday until 1751. Again it was presented only in 1936 and later in 1999, 2000, 2009 and in 2015.
The latest reprisals were incredibly wide scale—they were executed with the participation of as many as 800 actors, 80 horses and hundreds of volunteers. It is usually performed all over the town—at the main square, near the castle, and at the lower parts of the town.
Again the play will be performed six years after the last one, in 2021. Another interesting fact is that the Passion Play was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
