Although this dish is nothing new for some East European countries, it is definitely a not-so-ordinary Christmas dish in general. Raw herring is fermented with onions, sugar, and pepper which makes it a bit crunchy and salty-sugary at the same time! Traditionally it is also fermented with cream, but nowadays you can get it with or without it! Moreover, some varieties include different berries!
