Semana Santa or Holy Week is an important time of the year for every Belizean. Easter holidays, which last for at least four days, are filled with festivals, art, and sports events. Locals also meet with family and enjoy traditional Easter dishes: Garifuna sere soup and cross buns.
Benque Viejo Del Carmen
The main religious festivity is held in Benque Viejo Del Carmen. Actors gather there to display an impressive performance that tells the story of Easter. Realistic play also attracts many tourists. During this event, you will notice sawdust carpets made right in the middle of the street. These have a sacred and symbolic meaning and look incredibly beautiful.
Horse and Bike Race
Races are among Belize's most awaited Easter events. Two of them take place during the Holy Week. First, the cross-country bicycle race, founded back in 1928, runs from Belize City to San Ignacio. This race is for both amateurs and professionals. On the contrary, the Burrell Boom Horse race is just for advanced riders and spectators. It usually happens during the weekend and features plenty of family-friendly activities.
