Salzburg Christkindlmarkt is one of the oldest in the world. Located in the heart of the city at the Dom and Residenzplatz, the Christmas market in Salzburg is the main highlight of the Advent season in the city. The Advent Market tradition dates back in Salzburg to the late 15th century. It boasts a unique atmosphere and fairytale ambiance due to its location at the foot of the Hohensalzburg fortress.

Salzburg Christmas Market Highlights

Salzburg Christmas Market features 100 wooden chalets offering handmade gifts, crafts, decor items, and delicious foods. Mulled wine, hot punch, and the aromas of cinnamon and citrus contribute to the holiday atmosphere, enhanced with specially designed lighting, stretching from one market stall to another.

Salzburg Christmas Market Events

Entertainment at the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt includes a Krampus run on December 5, a Traditional Perchten run on December 21, Sing-Along every Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm, concerts, Traditional wind music performances every Wednesday at 6 pm and every Thursday and Saturday at 6:30 pm. Guests can also attend visits by the “Christ Child” with his angels every Sunday at 4 pm, as well as Christmas story readings on Wednesdays at 4 pm. Traditional music is performed on the square every Wednesday and Thursday at 6:30 pm.

Be sure to attend the New Year's Eve market, which follows Christkindlmarkt. At midnight, the new year will be welcomed with a festive fireworks display. On January 1, the gastronomic market's huts will remain open until 6 pm.

The market operates from 10 am to 8:30 pm Monday through Thursday, from 10 am to 9 pm on Friday, from 9 am to 9 pm on Saturday, and from 9 am to 8:30 pm on Sundays and holidays. Additionally, the Christmas market operates on December 24 from 9 am to 3 pm, on December 25 and 26 from 11 am to 6 pm, on December 27-30 from 10 am to 8:30 pm, on December 31 from 10 am to 1 am, and on January 1 from 10 am to 6 pm.

Salzburg Christmas Market History

The origins of the Salzburg Christmas market date back to the late 15th century. At that time, the so-called “Tandlmarkt” took place on Cathedral Square in the heart of the city, offering a variety of goods for locals to purchase. By the 17th century, the Advent market had become known as the “Nikolaimarkt” or "Saint Nicholas' Market." The "Nikolaimarkt" was one of the most renowned Advent markets of its time, second only to those in Vienna, Paris, Amsterdam, and Nuremberg. The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt, as it is known today, has operated since 1974.
